ST DAMIAN'S BUNDOORA
Learning & Teaching
Learning and teaching at St Damian’s develops the academic, social, and emotional development with the aim to maximise learning growth for all students. We focus on building core skills in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving through engaging and age-appropriate activities. Our teachers play a crucial role in creating a caring, supportive and inclusive environment where children feel safe to explore, ask questions, and make mistakes. Learning is often hands-on and interactive, encouraging curiosity and fostering a love for discovery that can last a lifetime. Learning is enhanced when teachers and students work within a positive culture that reflects gospel values and respects the human person.
The Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 is comprehensive, knowledge-rich and interconnected, ensuring a cohesive and dynamic learning experience that enables students to become lifelong learners who are active and informed citizens that contribute to their world.

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTIONS
English

The English curriculum at St Damian’s offers a strong and engaging program for students from Foundation to Year 6. In the early years (Foundation to Year 2), we use the Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) program, an explicit, systematic and sequential phonics-based approach to early literacy development. This approach supports early reading and writing development through a variety of immersive activities including games, crafts, music, puppets, Chitter-Chitter Chants and drawing. Students in these years also enjoy using decodable readers both in class and at home to build confidence and fluency.
From Years 3 to 6, students participate in The Code spelling program and use Ochre Education resources to support the teaching of the Victorian English Curriculum. A highlight of our English program is Book Week, which is celebrated with a vibrant costume parade, exciting author and illustrator visits, and a range of fun and inspiring activities that promote a love of reading across the school.

Our teachers are supported by comprehensive resources from Ochre Education to deliver the Victorian 2.0 Mathematics Curriculum with clarity and consistency. All mathematical teaching begins with developing a Growth Mindset in our students, helping them approach challenges with confidence and resilience. We also provide opportunities for students to extend their learning through participation in national competitions, including the Australian Maths Competition, the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking competition, the Coding Challenge and ICAS.
